Islanders are being invited to explore the Isle of Wight’s past through storytelling, as The Open University hosts a free creative writing workshop in Sandown later this month.
The workshop, titled A Virtual Walk Through History: Writing Creatively About the Past, will take place on Thursday 22 January, from 5.30pm to 7.30pm, at Boojum & Snark on Sandown High Street.
Open to everyone and free of charge, the session will focus on lost histories and identity along the south coast of the Isle of Wight, encouraging participants to reflect on Island life both past and present.
Senior Lecturer at The Open University, Emily Bullock, said the workshop will use a range of creative prompts inspired by the local coastline and history.
“Writers will be invited to think about life on the Island, past and present,” she explained.
“Through writing exercises inspired by coastal walks, historical documents and lost memories, we’ll explore how the history of place can shape our writing.”
Led by Open University instructors, the workshop will guide participants on a “virtual walk” through the Island’s coastal history — all without leaving the warmth of the café.
No previous writing experience is required, and the session is suitable for writers of all abilities.
Dr Samuel Sargeant, Postgraduate Convenor for English and Creative Writing at The Open University, said:
“We only ask that you bring your curiosity, a notebook, and a willingness to explore.”
While the event is free, places are limited. Anyone wishing to attend is asked to book in advance by emailing emily.bullock@open.ac.uk.
