This September marks one year since the Isle of Wight Council launched its free blood pressure monitor loan scheme – and the milestone is being celebrated during Know Your Numbers Week (8–14 September).
High blood pressure often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health problems, including heart attacks and strokes. The scheme gives residents the chance to check their blood pressure easily and for free.
Monitors can be borrowed from:
Lord Louis Library, Newport
Cowes Library
Ventnor Library
Sandown Library
Ryde Library
Freshwater Library
East Cowes Library
Since launching in September 2024, the service has seen 240 loans. Library staff say customers are “delighted” with how simple it is to use a monitor at home.
Around 1 in 4 people may have high blood pressure without realising it.
The council is encouraging Islanders to take the opportunity to check their numbers and, if
needed, seek medical advice.
The monitors are available to anyone aged 18 and over with a valid library membership.
Those not yet members can sign up quickly by bringing photo ID to their local library.
Free blood pressure checks are also available at many local pharmacies.
