Voters in Fairlee and Whippingham will have a choice of four candidates at the upcoming Isle of Wight Council elections on May 7.

Conservative councillor Matthew Price, who has represented the ward since 2013, is seeking re-election but faces challenges from three other candidates: Sophus Magill (Green Party), Patricia Margaret Packham (Liberal Democrats) and John Wilson (Reform UK).

The Local Democracy Reporting Service invited all candidates to submit a 100-word statement ahead of polling day.

Green Party candidate Sophus Magill, who was born on the Isle of Wight, is currently a student at the Isle of Wight College and serves as a parish councillor in Wootton Bridge.

He says his priorities include tackling sewage dumping in the Medina River and improving public services, particularly in health and justice.

Liberal Democrat candidate Patricia Margaret Packham did not provide a statement.

Incumbent councillor Matthew Price says he has lived in Newport all his life and has served as a school governor since 2012.

He is also a member of Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and Whippingham Parish Council, as well as a trustee for several organisations.

Currently vice chairman of the council’s planning committee, he says he has taken a balanced approach to planning decisions while representing residents’ views. He also highlights his opposition to council tax increases.

Reform UK candidate John Wilson did not provide a statement.

The election will take place on May 7.
