Fire crews were called to the Isle of Wight Crematorium in Whippingham on Tuesday lunchtime after reports of a fire prompted the evacuation of the building during an ongoing service.
The incident unfolded shortly after midday, when fire alarms sounded at the crematorium and all those inside were asked to leave the premises as a precaution.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service mobilised appliances from several stations in response to the alert, amid concerns that a fire had broken out at the site.
However, by the time the first crew from Newport arrived, the situation had already been brought under control and the fire had extinguished itself.
Firefighters carried out a brief investigation and subsequently declared the building safe, with no further action required.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said:
"Firefighters were called to a crematorium in Newport at around midday. Crews arrived to find the fire was already out."
A stop message was issued at 12:17, bringing the incident to a close shortly after emergency crews arrived at the scene.
No further intervention from firefighters was necessary.
