Drivers are being advised to plan ahead after emergency road closures were introduced in Newport, East Cowes and Apse Heath to allow essential works to be carried out.

New Street in Newport has been closed between its junctions with Trafalgar Road and Chapel Street.

The closure came into force at 11:40am on Sunday (31 May) and could remain in place for up to five days, or until the work is completed.

A signed diversion route is operating via Trafalgar Road, Carisbrooke Road, West Street and Cross Street.

Meanwhile, Gort Road in East Cowes has been closed from its junction with Vectis Road for around 167 metres in a southerly direction.

The closure began at 8:29am on Monday (1 June) and is also expected to remain in place for no more than five days.

Motorists are being diverted via Gort Road, Cadets Walk and Vectis Road.

A third emergency closure has been introduced on Newport Road at Apse Heath.

The affected section runs between the Sandown and Shanklin Bridleway 54 junction and Scotchells Brook Lane for approximately 407 metres.

The closure came into effect at 6:30am on Monday and could remain in force for up to five days while works are carried out.

Drivers are being diverted via Sandown Road, Arthurs Hill, North Road, Queens Road, High Street, Western Road, Victoria Avenue, Godshill Road, Whiteley Bank, Canteen Road and Ventnor Road.

Island Roads, acting on behalf of the Isle of Wight Council, has implemented the closures under emergency powers contained within the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Access to properties will be maintained where reasonably possible throughout the works.

Motorists are advised to allow extra time for journeys and follow signed diversion routes.
