East Cowes Jigsaw Festival Set For Biggest Event In Its 31-Year History

The Isle of Wight's much-loved St James Church Jigsaw Puzzle Festival is returning next week – and organisers say it will be the biggest in the event's 31-year history.

Around 2,500 jigsaw puzzles will be available to buy during the six-day festival at St James Church in East Cowes, a huge increase from the 80 puzzles displayed when the fundraiser first began in 1995.

The annual event has become one of the Island's most distinctive summer traditions, attracting between 400 and 500 visitors each year. While many come from across the Isle of Wight, others travel from the mainland, with some regulars even planning their holidays around the festival.

Volunteers spend months completing donated puzzles before mounting them on display boards throughout the church, allowing visitors to see exactly what they're buying.

Once a puzzle is sold, it's carefully packed away and replaced with another, meaning around 300 completed puzzles are on display at any one time.

This year's collection includes everything from landscapes and famous works of art to children's puzzles, transport themes, Christmas scenes, Wasgij favourites, 3D puzzles and collector's editions.

Organisers also make sure almost every donated puzzle gets a second life.

Puzzles with minor damage or missing pieces are sold in a Bargain Basement, while others are transformed into greetings cards, framed artwork, epoxy resin gifts and other handmade souvenirs.

Visitors can also enjoy homemade cakes and light refreshments in the church hall, browse an expanded souvenir stall and take part in the popular Puzzle Tombola.

A new attraction for 2026 is the Find the Jigsaw Pieces Trail, where children can search the church grounds for hidden puzzle pieces before claiming a prize.

Festival organisers Mike Harris and Celia Jones said:

"When the festival first started in 1995, nobody could have imagined we'd one day be preparing around 2,500 puzzles for a single festival.

"We're incredibly proud of how it has grown, but what makes it truly special isn't the number of puzzles — it's the people behind them.

"Hundreds of volunteers have helped over the years, not just in East Cowes but across the Island and even on the mainland.

"This year we've had more people making puzzles than ever before, and every one of them has played a part in making the festival what it is today.

"People often tell us they came for the puzzles but return year after year because of the atmosphere. That's when you realise we've become far more than a puzzle festival—we've become part of people's Isle of Wight summer."

The organisers have also thanked volunteers and businesses including Ravensburger, HOP, Wentworth, Jewson Ryde and Indigo Signs & Printing for supporting this year's event.

The St James Church Jigsaw Puzzle Festival runs from Monday 10th August until Saturday 15th August, opening daily from 10am until 4pm, with late openings on Wednesday and Thursday from 6:30pm until 8:30pm.

Admission costs £1 for adults, while children go free. Visitors can return as many times as they like throughout the week without paying again.
