Plans to install new toilet and shower facilities at a historic East Cowes barracks building have sparked criticism from a local councillor.
The proposals, submitted by the Cowes Harbour Commission, would see alterations and an extension added to The Guardhouse at Victoria Barracks on Albany Road.
The works are intended to provide new showers, toilets and wash-down areas for boat users at the nearby East Cowes Marina.
The Guardhouse dates back to 1872 and originally supported military staff serving Queen Victoria and the Royal Family at nearby Osborne House.
However, Isle of Wight councillor Karl Love has raised objections to the design.
He said the Guardhouse is a “jewel” of the conservation area and argued the proposals risk damaging historic features.
Cllr Love criticised plans to create a new entrance through the building’s original cast-iron railings, saying an existing historic entrance could instead be reinstated.
He also questioned the design of the proposed extension, describing the flat-roof structure as “out of character with the heritage values of the building”.
Consultants working on the scheme say the development is needed to support the growing marina and provide facilities for boat users.
They argue the plans represent a “heritage-sensitive, conservation-led scheme” that would restore the Guardhouse while adding necessary amenities.
Public consultation on the planning application runs until 7 April, with a decision expected later that month.
