HRH The Duchess of Gloucester has officially opened the Isle of Wight NHS Trust’s Community Diagnostic Centre during a visit to the island.

The purpose-built facility, which opened at the end of 2024, is designed to improve access to vital scans, tests and checks for patients locally – reducing the need to travel to the mainland and speeding up diagnoses.

In its first year, the centre has delivered activity equivalent to around 88% of the island’s population, providing services including imaging, cardiology and respiratory testing.

During the visit on Friday, 1 May, the Duchess was welcomed by senior NHS leaders and met staff working across the centre, hearing how the new service is helping to reduce waiting times and improve patient care.

She also toured the hospital’s Emergency Department, including the Children’s Emergency Department, which has been redesigned with dedicated play and sensory spaces to support younger patients and families.

The Isle of Wight Youth Forum, who have been working with NHS staff to improve the children’s emergency care environment, also met with the Duchess during her visit.

NHS leaders say the new diagnostic centre marks a major milestone for healthcare on the island, bringing more services closer to home and improving patient outcomes through faster testing and treatment pathways.

The visit concluded with the unveiling of a plaque to mark the official opening of the centre.
