A driver has miraculously escaped serious injury after their car left the road, rolled, and came to rest down a hillside off The Downs earlier today.
Emergency services were called at around 11:45am following reports of a collision on The Downs Road, towards Newport.
It’s understood the hatchback mounted the verge and went through a fence before descending the slope.
Tyre marks on the carriageway suggest the driver attempted to regain control before the vehicle left the road.
Fire crews from Ryde and Newport attended the scene, along with a specialist 4x4 unit from Shanklin.
Officers from Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service also responded, including an Operational Commander and a Critical Care Paramedic.
Crews were positioned both on The Downs Road and at a rendezvous point at the bottom of the downs off Shepherds Lane while the situation was assessed.
Fortunately, it was quickly established that the driver had not suffered serious injuries.
They were assisted from the vehicle and handed into the care of ambulance staff.
The Downs Road was closed between Downend and Rowlands Lane while emergency services dealt with the incident, but has since reopened.
