This year, Dover Park put a green spin on World Book Day, trading “Once Upon a Time” for “Once Upon a Planet”.
The school’s celebrations were inspired by Tim Walters’ book, Island SOS, which explores the delicate balance between humans and nature.
From Reading to litter picking - the children didn’t just read the story - they lived it.
Across all year groups, pupils took part in activities linking reading, writing, maths and art to environmental themes. They also got hands-on with litter picking sessions around the school grounds.
The day wasn’t all serious, though — favourite book characters popped up across the school, proving that even Mary Poppins and Harry Potter care about the planet.
Headteacher Jon Kirby said:
“It was incredible to see the children so immersed in Island SOS.
"Tim Walters’ book was the perfect way to discuss keeping our own ‘island’ clean. Seeing The Lorax in school, thoughtfully discussing environmental impact, is exactly why we love World Book Day!”
Linking Literacy and Real-World LearningThe event combined literacy with life lessons.
Pupils wrote poetry, persuasive letters, and reports on environmental issues, developing their spelling, punctuation and grammar while learning to think like informed, empathetic citizens.
Mr Kirby added that every child has the power to “write a better future” and thanked Tim Walters for supporting the school and inspiring students to consider their impact on the environment.
