The Isle of Wight’s first ever Red Squirrel Ride has been declared a huge success – with cyclists travelling from across the country to take part in the charity challenge.
Riders from as far afield as Manchester, Norfolk and Heathrow descended on the Island to support the RSPCA Isle of Wight Animal Centre, with participants taking on routes that showcased the Island’s stunning scenery.
Some came to push their limits, others to discover new parts of the Island, and many rode in memory of much-loved rescue pets.
David Gable, who made the journey from Heathrow, summed up the experience with a smile, saying:
“Survived the 34-mile Red Squirrel Ride thanks to two things; stunning Isle of Wight scenery and a frankly irresponsible amount of cake at the refreshment stops.
"Pretty sure I ate more calories than I burned – but that’s what charity rides are for, right? Sign me up again next year!!”
The event was powered by a dedicated team of volunteers, who manned checkpoints, handed out refreshments, and guided cyclists safely along the route.
Steve Backhouse, Branch Director of RSPCA Isle of Wight and a keen cyclist himself, said:
“We’re incredibly grateful to our volunteers. Their energy, encouragement, and commitment ensured the success of this first event.
"From manning checkpoints to guiding riders on the route, they were the heartbeat of the day.”
Refreshment stops at Quarr Abbey, The Old Barracks at Puckpool, and Alverstone Old School Hall kept spirits high, while unique wooden medals – produced by Meridian 3 – gave riders a memento to treasure.
Organisers are already planning to bring the event back next year, with hopes of making it even bigger and better, raising more vital funds for animal welfare on the Island.
