Cowes Venue Joliffe Ceases Trading With Immediate Effect

A well-known Cowes café, restaurant and bar has closed its doors with immediate effect.

Joliffe announced yesterday (Monday, June 8) that it had ceased trading, bringing an end to the latest chapter for the long-established business on Shooters Hill.

In a statement issued on social media, the business said a combination of financial and operational pressures had left it unable to continue.

The statement reads in full:

"It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we, as of today (June 8), have ceased trading.

"The lack of Government support of hospitality, skyrocketing energy costs, Island Roads, staffing difficulties and decreasing footfall have all collectively squeezed every last drop out of our already struggling business.

"We would like to thank every single one of our customers for the wonderful support that you have given to us.

"The Joliffe family will miss every one of you.

"Best wishes and thank you from John and all of our team."

The closure follows ongoing challenges facing many businesses within the hospitality sector, including rising operating costs, recruitment difficulties and changing consumer spending habits.

The prominent Shooters Hill premises has a rich history within Cowes.

The building originally housed a boot-making and shoe business founded by Henry Jolliffe in the mid-19th century and traded under the Jolliffe name for around 150 years before becoming a hospitality venue in more recent years.

Many customers have taken to social media to share messages of support and memories of the venue following the announcement.

No further information has been released regarding the future of the premises.
