A popular Cowes seafront venue has been granted a premises licence despite objections over potential noise, nuisance and public safety concerns.

The Isle of Wight Council's Licensing Sub-Committee approved the application for Commodores House on Cowes High Street at a hearing on Tuesday.

The decision allows the venue to sell alcohol and host regulated entertainment, subject to a number of conditions aimed at protecting nearby residents.

These include the installation and operation of a CCTV system, signage asking patrons to respect neighbours when leaving the venue, and compliance with an approved noise management plan.

Supporters of the application told councillors the venue plays an important role in the local economy, generating work for caterers, musicians, florists, photographers, suppliers and other businesses linked to weddings and events.

Speaking on behalf of owner John Terry, Laura Jordan said many licensed premises already operate successfully alongside residential properties in Cowes.

She argued that the town's busy High Street location, with its mix of hospitality and commercial businesses, should be considered when assessing the application.

However, neighbouring residents raised concerns about the potential impact of events on those living nearby.

Representing a resident whose property adjoins the venue, barrister Philip Kolvin KC highlighted concerns about noise escaping from the building, particularly during larger events.

Independent noise consultant Dani Fiumicelli told the hearing that Commodores House was not originally designed as an entertainment venue and that sound insulation within the building was relatively limited.

He also warned that a narrow passageway leading to the venue could amplify noise due to sound reflecting between surrounding buildings, potentially increasing disturbance for nearby residents.

After considering evidence from both sides, councillors approved the licence with additional conditions designed to mitigate any impact on the surrounding area.
