Cowes McDonald's Plans Recommended For Refusal

Plans for a new McDonald's restaurant with a drive-thru in Cowes have been recommended for refusal ahead of a decision by Isle of Wight Council's Planning Committee next week.

The multi-million-pound proposal would see a restaurant built next to Three Gates Road, creating around 120 jobs if approved.

However, planning officers say the application has failed to demonstrate how it would support healthy lifestyles or help prevent ill health in the community.

In a report published ahead of Tuesday's Planning Committee meeting, officers also raise concerns about the development's impact on the character of the area, insufficient ecological information and the lack of a legal agreement to secure a contribution towards the Island's Rights of Way network.

The proposed site is within walking distance of a school and other places where children regularly gather.

Planning officers say:

"Due to the location and based on the information provided with the application, the proposal has failed to demonstrate that the use would enable and support healthy lives or promote good health and prevent ill-health.

They also argue the proposed fencing and layout would have a detrimental impact on the appearance of the area.

McDonald's says the restaurant would meet growing customer demand, increase food choice in Cowes and create around 120 local jobs.

The application has sparked significant public interest, with 186 objections and 138 letters of support submitted to the council.

Several petitions have also been launched against the plans, attracting more than 2,200 signatures combined.

Supporters say the development would create jobs, provide affordable food for families, generate business rates and bring investment to the area.

Opponents have raised concerns over noise, litter, traffic, anti-social behaviour, light pollution, late-night activity, impacts on wildlife and public health.

Councillors on the Isle of Wight Council Planning Committee are due to consider the application on Tuesday 28th July.
