A 36-year-old man has been jailed after attempting to break into a number of homes across Cowes and Newport.

In the early hours of 20 October 2024, Jake Dunkling tried to open front and back doors at several properties in Tennyson Road and Bridge Road in Cowes.

Police say he carried out similar attempts in Newport on 3 August, targeting addresses in Godric Road and Dormouse Drive. During the incidents he caused damage to a gate and also tried to access a car parked on the street.

Dunkling, of Carisbrooke High Street, was charged with nine counts of attempted burglary, along with criminal damage and vehicle interference.

He admitted all offences.

He was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Portsmouth Crown Court on Wednesday (10 December).

PC Indie Hart said:

“Dunkling made a number of brazen attempts to gain entry to people’s homes on the Isle of Wight.
"He tried door handles, climbed over fences and even approached back doors.
"Fortunately, the properties were locked and some homeowners challenged him through their doorbell cameras.
“He will now spend time in prison, and we continue to urge residents to report any suspicious behaviour in their neighbourhood.”
