Motorists faced delays yesterday (Saturday, April 11) after a cow – believed at the time to possibly be a bull – was reported loose on the road near Brading Downs.

Police were first alerted to the animal at around 12:31pm, with multiple calls from members of the public reporting it in the area of Downs Road and the junction with Brading Downs Road.

In updates shared by Isle of Wight Police, officers were dispatched to the scene as traffic began to build.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area where possible and to remain in their vehicles if caught in congestion.

At the time, police said they were unsure who owned the animal and asked for anyone with information about nearby fields or livestock owners to come forward.

A short time later, officers confirmed the cow had been safely ushered back into a field, bringing the situation under control.

PCSO Keefe remained at the scene to try and identify and contact the owner, while officers worked to establish how the animal had managed to escape.

Police added that preventing any potential accidents was their main priority and reassured the public that the situation had been resolved without incident.
