There’s been plenty to celebrate across Isle of Wight care homes this month — from a centenarian’s milestone birthday to touching tributes and even a brewery adventure.
Muriel turns 100 at Vecta House
At Vecta House Care Home in Newport, resident Muriel marked her 100th birthday with a day of joy, music and community kindness.
The celebrations began with a pampering session before friends, family, staff and fellow residents gathered for an afternoon party complete with homemade cakes and live music from Si Wheeler.
A social media appeal launched by Lifestyle Leader Tanya Everson to collect 100 birthday cards for Muriel surpassed all expectations — with more than 140 cards arriving from across the UK and even overseas.
Among them was a special message from King Charles III.
Tanya said the outpouring of support had been “incredibly heartwarming”, adding:
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped make Muriel’s 100th birthday so truly unforgettable.”
Orchard House remembers the fallen

Meanwhile, residents and staff at Orchard House Care Home gathered to honour Remembrance Day with a moving in-house display and service.
The home was decorated with hundreds of handcrafted poppies and creative tributes made by the lifestyle team and residents, creating what organisers described as “a truly beautiful display of respect and gratitude.”
The day included a live performance from musician Peter, alongside a shared viewing of the national Remembrance service.
Lifestyle lead Katie Schlepp said:
“Today’s events served as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembrance, community, and honouring those who served.”
Brewery treat for Old Charlton House residents

And in Cowes, two residents from Old Charlton House Care Home — Harry and Colin — enjoyed a special birthday outing to Goddards Brewery in Arreton.
The pair, both fans of local ale after a summer visit to The Woodvale in Gurnard, were given a behind-the-scenes tour led by Brewery Manager Bob Simpson, who explained the brewing process and shared some fascinating ale history — including the fact that much of Britain’s early beer-making was done by women.
The highlight of the day, of course, was the tasting session.
“The beer has all been delicious — what a treat to try so many different sorts,” said Harry, while Colin added, “What a wonderful day we’ve had. I’d like to do this every day!”
Activities coordinator Debbie Webb praised the Goddards team for their kindness, saying the day had been “a magical experience” for both men.
