Emergency services were called to Waitrose in East Cowes after an electric car crashed into a wall at the supermarket yesterday afternoon (Monday).

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were sent to Castle Street shortly after 3pm following reports of a single-vehicle collision involving a Nissan Leaf.

The car is understood to have missed the turn required to leave the Waitrose car park before continuing forwards and striking a wall.

The impact was substantial, with the vehicle's airbags deploying and extensive damage sustained to its front end.

Waitrose staff were praised for acting quickly before emergency crews arrived, with those involved in the incident subsequently assessed by paramedics.

The Nissan was later recovered by Bartletts.

Full access to the Waitrose car park has since been restored.
