Plans to create ‘high quality’ and ‘boutique’ en-suite bed and breakfast rooms at an Isle of Wight pub have been given the green light.
Developers Character Inns IOW secured conditional planning permission to convert the first and second floors of The Kings Head into guest accommodation, alongside associated works.
Planning consultants previously said the proposal would provide a significant boost to the pub, helping it to “continue and thrive” for years to come.
The decision follows approval of listed building consent in December 2024, allowing internal changes to create five en-suite bedrooms within the historic property.
According to CAMRA, the pub is currently temporarily closed and is expected to reopen on or before May 1.
A report from County Hall said:
“The proposal is for internal alterations to form five B&B rooms, one of which is a family suite, comprising a bathroom and three bedrooms.
"These rooms are to be used in association with the operation of the public house.
“To create B&B rooms with ensuite facilities, alterations are required which mainly relate to the interior of the building.
“Listed building consent application 24/01615/LBC was approved in December 2024 for the proposed alterations with conditions applied.
"Most of the conditions have since been discharged.”
Planning officers concluded the scheme complies with Island planning policies and relevant legislation.
In a recent update on social media, the pub said:
“We’ve been working hard on a major refurbishment to bring this historic pub back to life.
“Unfortunately, ongoing building works mean that the pub itself is currently unable to open as planned.
“We’re working closely with building control throughout the final stages of the project to ensure everything meets the highest standards and that the building is 100 per cent safe and ready before we welcome guests through the doors.
“While this means the reopening will be slightly delayed, it’s the right thing to do to make sure everything is completed properly.”
