Boomtown To Host Academic Research Hub At This Year’s Festival

Boomtown organisers have announced the return of The Observatory, an academic research hub which will once again form part of the festival when it takes place in Winchester this August.

Described as the UK's first academic research hub integrated into a major music festival, The Observatory brings together university researchers, festivalgoers and industry experts to explore a range of social, cultural and environmental topics.

Led by Dr Martha Newson, Associate Professor of Psychology and a Future Leaders Fellow, the initiative will feature workshops, panel discussions and live research studies throughout the event.

Research themes for 2026 include social connection and social change, dance and creativity, behaviour and wellbeing, and the relationship between people and the environment.

Organisers say the project is designed to generate research with applications beyond the festival itself, using Boomtown's unique environment to study how people interact, collaborate and experience shared cultural events.

Findings from studies conducted through The Observatory are intended to contribute to wider academic research, with organisers saying the work is designed to be published and peer-reviewed.

Boomtown, which takes place between Wednesday August 12 and Sunday August 16 this summer, has increasingly positioned itself as a space for creativity, experimentation and cultural discussion alongside its music programme.
