Plans to give a popular Isle of Wight burger bar a new outside seating area, creating a more ‘Continental atmosphere’, have been conditionally approved.
J.S. Hospitality’s application to expand the Festival Diner Bar on Union Street in Ryde has been accepted by planners who said it would ‘likely contribute’ to the ‘overall vitality’ of the area.
Seating within the bar is at present ‘often fully occupied’, according to the firm’s agent, Mr N. White.
He said:
“The aim is to create a more ‘Continental’ atmosphere to the street scene which will be beneficial for Ryde, locals and visiting tourists.”
The council’s decision report said:
“The majority of the comments received are in support of the proposal, the main reason being that the provision of outside seating would be of benefit to the street scene and an added attraction to the area for users of Union Street.
“The proposed construction of the area for outside seating would be located in an area currently used for parking. Island Roads have commented on the proposal and have no objection.
“The use of the area for outside seating would be subject to a separate Pavement Licence which would ensure there is enough space for the safe movement of all highway users.
"A condition would also be applied to ensure all tables, chairs and parasols are placed inside the premises when the diner is closed.”
Council leader and Ryde county councillor Phil Jordan supported the application:
“The applicant is a well-known, responsible business owner, committed to serving the community, serious minded and driven to generally improve the retail offer in Union Street.
“I would want to support this enterprising approach and assist businesses to flourish and succeed, animating our towns, providing for a demand, and being part of a wider town centre offering working to make Ryde an attractive destination stop for all.”
