A handcrafted memorial bench celebrating the life of young Isle of Wight girl Sophie Rolf has been unveiled in the gardens at Mountbatten Isle of Wight.

The striking bench, featuring a giant sunflower and colourful butterflies, was created by Zara Knight in memory of her childhood friend, who died in 2013 aged just six after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour.

The project was completed in partnership with Kissy Puppy: The Sophie Rolf Trust, the charity established by Sophie's parents to support Mountbatten's services for children with life-limiting conditions.

Zara said Sophie remained a constant inspiration throughout the creation of the bench.

"Sophie is always in the forefront of my mind. I really wanted the bench to be for her, and something for Mountbatten, because she was always just so giving and wanting to do stuff for other people.
"She was influencing me whilst I was making it."

Sophie's parents, Gemma Blamire and Aaron Rolf, said they were deeply moved by the tribute and the enduring friendship between the two girls.

Gemma said:

"Her friends meant the world to her and obviously, when she got poorly, at that age friends are everything — they were her life. I think Sophie would be extremely happy that Zara's done this.
"It shows their friendship meant a lot to her, and that really means something to us."

Aaron added:

"It's phenomenal. I knew the bench would be special, but we were absolutely blown away when we saw it.
"It just epitomises the friendship they had. I remember them when they were little, coming out of school, dragging their book bags, with one sock up and one sock down.
"It's a testament to the friendship that, even after all these years, Zara still thinks of Sophie and does something like this.
"That's all we can ask really – that people keep Sophie's memory alive."

Sophie died in 2013, a year after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. In her memory, her parents established Kissy Puppy: The Sophie Rolf Trust, which continues to raise funds to help Mountbatten Isle of Wight provide care and support for children living with life-limiting conditions.

The new bench now takes pride of place in Mountbatten's gardens, offering visitors a peaceful place to sit and reflect while serving as a lasting tribute to a remarkable young girl and the friendship that continues to inspire more than a decade later.
