An amber heat health alert has been issued for the Isle of Wight as exceptionally warm and humid weather continues across southern England.

Temperatures are expected to climb above 30C during the middle of the week, while overnight temperatures could remain above 20C, bringing little relief from the heat.

The alert warns that the hot conditions could have widespread impacts on health, transport and infrastructure, with the potential for heat-related illness affecting people of all ages.

Residents and visitors are being urged to drink plenty of water, stay out of direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, and check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbours.

With thousands expected to head to the Island's beaches and coastline, safety experts are also reminding people to take care when entering the water and to choose lifeguarded beaches where possible.

Transport disruption, including delays on roads and public transport, is also possible as temperatures remain exceptionally high.

The hot and humid conditions are expected to continue until at least Thursday, although forecasters say there is some uncertainty over when cooler weather may arrive.
