Two lost children and two emergency service call-outs were also recorded during an eight-week period, according to Ventnor Town Council.

Ventnor beach officers recorded 68 situations requiring first aid treatment between July 13 and September 6 this year.

The council’s beach safety report also documents 41 incidents involving dogs, when owners were given advice, alongside two incidents relating to barbecues or fires.

Officers gave beach safety advice or warnings on 223 occasions and provided tourist information 289 times. Two children were reported lost, while emergency services were called out twice.

The figures were discussed at Ventnor Town Council’s meeting on Monday (October 12), ahead of a public consultation on beach safety next month.

Mayor Steve Cooper described the issue as a “hot topic” and said he expected strong attendance at the meeting.

The council’s report also compares this summer’s figures with last year, when the beach was monitored over a longer, 17-week season.

During that period, 59 incidents requiring first aid were recorded, alongside one lost child and one emergency service call-out. Officers also gave advice over dogs on the beach on 99 occasions.

The public consultation, organised jointly by Ventnor Town Council and Ventnor Carnival Committee, will take place at St Catherine’s Church at 6pm on Wednesday, November 4.
