A major new community-led energy project is set to launch on the Isle of Wight after Green Isle of Wight CIC secured £450,000 from the Ofgem Energy Redress Scheme.

The funding will support the creation of Vectis Community Energy’s Virtual Island Battery Ecosystem — an innovative initiative that will see between 100 and 200 smart batteries installed in homes, schools, and small businesses across the Island.

The batteries will store electricity when it’s cheaper and cleaner, then release it during peak times, helping residents cut bills, lower carbon emissions, and reduce pressure on the national grid.

Participating households could save £400–£450 a year on their energy costs, with even greater savings for those using solar power. Collectively, the scheme could prevent 400–700 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Unlike large commercial projects, Vectis Community Energy will be community-owned and community-led, with Islanders able to invest through a local share offer.

Some households—particularly those in vulnerable circumstances—will be offered batteries free or at reduced cost, ensuring the scheme remains fair and inclusive.

The two-year project will be delivered by Green Isle of Wight CIC in partnership with the Centre for Energy Equality, alongside community engagement events, school workshops, and household assessments.

Lisa Beaney, Managing Director of Green Isle of Wight CIC, said:

“This funding is a game-changer for the Island.
"Vectis Energy will help local families save money and take control of their energy future.
"Most importantly, it shows that the transition to clean energy can be fair, inclusive, and community-owned.”

The project officially begins in November 2025, with public engagement events planned in the coming months.
