Wessex Cancer Trust Welcomes Clients Back Face To Face On Isle Of Wight

Wessex Cancer Trust is welcoming back Islanders for face-to-face care, as lockdown measures continue to ease.

Clients are now able to attend the charity’s four cancer support centres for pre-booked counselling and befriending appointments.

Covid-safe measures are in place and visits are limited to one household at a time. Face-to-face therapies will restart in June.

Wessex Cancer Trust’s head of services, Colette Cowan, said:

“When the first lockdown was announced, people really needed our support and we quickly introduced a range of remote support services. These have been popular and we’ll be keeping them available for clients who may find it more difficult to get into a support centre.

“But we can’t wait to get back to our centres and we’ve been really touched by the number of people who’ve told us they feel the same. It really reaffirms the value of the community that clients, volunteers and staff create there.

“New clients have also been keen to visit our centres to meet Phil, our wellbeing coordinator, and chat about what support they need. We’re encouraging all our staff and volunteers to have their Covid-19 vaccination as soon as they’re offered it and we have rigorous hygiene procedures in place. We want everyone who visits to feel reassured that it’s safe to do so.”

Mike Sizer-Green, manager of the Isle of Wight Support Centre, explained what being back in the centre means to both him and local people living with cancer.

He said:

“On the Island, the Wessex Cancer Trust team worked so hard to finance the rebuilding of the now fabulous Isle of Wight Cancer Wellbeing Centre.
“The irony for us was that we never really got to use it properly because the first lockdown was announced two weeks after the official opening date.

“We’re so excited now to be able to reopen the centre and, once again, to be able to offer face-to-face support for Islanders affected by cancer. Our clients always comment about how lovely the centre is and how welcome they feel. We are honoured to be able to offer our support.”
