WATCH: Gun Salute Welcomes Polish Warship For ORP Błyskawica Commemoration

A gun salute welcomed Polish warship ORP Wodnik to Cowes earlier, as part of commemorations to mark 80 years since ORP Błyskawica defended the Island from Nazi bombing.

Royal Yacht Squadron exchanged salutes to greet the vessel. It's one of several events taking place for the anniversary.

The Friends of the ORP Błyskawica Society, a Cowes based organisation, has been working hard to make the occasion a moment to remember.

On the evening of the May 4, 1942, 160 German bombers arrived off Cowes. Over 70 people died night and many more were injured — but the Polish destroyer defended the two towns from certain obliteration.

The five-day long celebration will take place across both towns, as an opportunity for people to learn about the events that took place and to pay their respects.

Among the events being held include exhibitions, guided walks, a parade and musical performances. A commemorative plaque will also be unveiled in Kings Square.

Red Funnel has funded the plaque. CEO Fran Collins and CFO Graham Barnetson are attending many of the commemorative events.

With the Island set to welcome visitors from across the world, Red Funnel has provided transport for many of those taking part in the events.

This includes Chris Riches, the great grandson of Captain Wojciech Francki, who is travelling from Australia to attend, and will be joined by family members.

Graham Barnetson, Chief Financial Officer at Red Funnel, and Isle of Wight resident, connected with Chris and has been in touch with the family, introducing them to members of Cowes Town Council.

He said:

“It is important that we take the time to reflect on these significant and pivotal events in history and commemorate the valiant efforts of those who protected the Isle of Wight. We are honoured to be supporting the Friends of the ORP Blyskawica Society to commemorate and celebrate this incredibly important event.

“Cowes and East Cowes are very special to us at Red Funnel and our customers, both on the Isle of Wight and the mainland, and we believe it’s important that everyone understands the significance of what happened here 80 years ago. We are proud to support the events of the anniversary, paying homage to the brave women and men involved, to make sure their stories, and this piece of our shared history, are never forgotten.”
