WATCH As Isle Of Wight MP Speaks Ukrainian During PMQS

Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely spoke in Ukrainian as he addressed the country's ambassador to the UK in Parliament earlier today (Wednesday).

Parliamentary rules were broken to all Vadym Prystaiko to sit in on Prime Minister's Questions.

The decision to do so was applauded by members, who gave the official a standing ovation when he was announced by speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle.

Addressing the gallery, Mr Seely thanked the official, before going on to ask Prime Minister Boris Johnson a question about Russia's invasion.

He asked:

"Key oligarchs enforce the Kremlin's hybrid conflict.

"In Britain, one of its aims is to ensure safe passage for money flows off-shore whilst law firms intimidate into silence those who would investigate, be it the media or the National Crime Agency.

"Does the Prime Minister understand that this is how state corruption happens and this is systemic, planned subversion. Does he realise the seriousness of what's been happening to law firms and finance companies in recent years?"

The Prime Minister responded by saying:

"He's raising a very important point and the law firms in this country are regulated by the Solicitor's Regulation Authority.

"They were reminded on February 23 the need to comply with sanctions, regulations, legislation and there are regular checks to ensure that they are doing so.

"They have responsibilities under that regime to safeguard the UK and to protect the reputation of the United Kingdom legal services industry and, clearly, they will face sanctions if they fail to do so."

In the 90s, during his time as a correspondent in eastern Europe, Mr Seely spent time in Ukraine and Russia.

He is currently a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
