Tragic Tale Of Valentine Grey Re-Enacted To Raise Funds For Isle Of Wight Youth Trust

One of the Isle of Wight's most enduringly tragic tales was the subject of re-enactment at the Quay Arts.

Thursday April 28 saw Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council join forces with the IW Sealed Writ Society to present Valentine Gray: The Trial.

Performing to a sold-out crowd, legal professionals past and present shared their portrayal of the trial of Benjamin and Margaret Davies using original court manuscripts and newspaper articles.

The event was arranged by Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council as part of the Year of the Child 2022, with proceeds of £407.10 being donated to the IW Youth Trust

Cllr Julie Jones-Evans, member for Newport Central, said:

"Valentine's treatment at the hands of his employer is something deeply ingrained in our local history and a reminder that children today still suffer.

"The performance of the trial was fantastic, hearing the actual evidence used at the time was an eye-opener and very moving.

"Thanks must go to the performers, Roger Fruen, and the packed-out audience for their support"
