'Too Many Taxis, Not Enough Ranks' Fears After Newport Changes

There are fears Newport will have too many taxis and not enough ranks in the short-term, after recent changes.

Following the easing of restrictions, South Street's rank - which was being used by some Southern Vectis buses - has been freed up for cabbies' use once again.

However, the rank outside Morrisons, which has been shut for St George's Way works, doesn't look likely to reopen until next month at the earliest.

Taxi drivers were allowed to operate from the Church Litten car park, after the closure of both ranks, but it has since reopened.

Isle of Wight Radio has been told there's concern over parking arrangements, with 'more taxis than spaces'.

The Isle of Wight Council says it's hopeful the Morrison's rank will be reinstated soon.

A spokesperson said additional ranks are available in the High Street.

“We do appreciate that this has been a difficult period for operators and we are pleased that we are now able to reinstate the South Street rank. Additional taxi rank spaces are also available in the High Street.

“The implementation of the St George’s Way improvement has not been without challenge, but we are hopeful that we will be able to withdraw the temporary traffic management arrangements and reinstate the rank next to Morrison’s early in August. This will be confirmed as soon as possible.”
