THREE Suspected Explosives Destroyed On Island Beach

Three objects, all of them suspected to be explosives left behind, possibly after wartime conflicts, have been destroyed by bomb disposal experts in a single operation on an Isle of Wight Beach.

Members of The Needles Coastguard Rescue team said they began their work on Friday afternoon (February 26) after a member of the public reported a "possible ordnance" at Totland Bay.

But, once coastguards had arrived on scene to inspect the discovery, a separate report arrived of a similar find at Alum Bay.

The initial piece of ordnance (submerged image) was deemed inaccessible at the time due to the incoming tide, so team reported that it relocated to Alum Bay where two items of ordnance where located with assistance from the people who reported them.

With the incoming tide covering the ordnance once more the team returned to base — with a plan to meet the explosive ordnance disposal team (bomb disposal) on Saturday at low tide.

Coastguards said that, upon inspection, the items at Alum Bay were deemed as 'safe' by E.O.D and removed from the beach.

The original Totland Ordnance was destroyed in a controlled explosion at around 4.20pm on Saturday, when the tide allowed access.

The two pieces from Alum Bay were also destroyed in the same explosion.

In a message to all who use Island beaches, the coastguard said:

"Ordnance or marine pyrotechnics can be extremely dangerous.

"We urge all that discover items that they believe to be such to leave the items in situ, mark the position with a noticeable marker at the base of the cliff and move away.

"Then, dial 999 and ask for Coastguard."
