Swimmer Oly's Isle Of Wight World Record Attempt Underway

A 65-mile swimming challenge around the Isle of Wight is underway to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

Oly Rush has taken the plunge off the Island's coast to highlight the problem, and in an attempt to break a world record.

The 36-year-old, from Dorset, set off from Seaview this morning (Monday) and hopes to be back there in 26 hours.

At the time of writing, Oly has already made it to near the Needles. He plans to continue swimming overnight.

Speaking ahead of his swim, Oly told Isle of Wight Radio:

"Plastic pollution is widespread, and I have an overwhelming urge to do as much as I can to clean it up and implement change. I'm fortunate enough to work closely with two organisations, Clean Jurassic Coast CIC and Oceans To Earth CIC. We carry out vital work along the Jurassic coastline and in local education. This year's swim will be aimed at raising awareness about the devastating impact we
are having on the planet.”

Oly is also behind the Instagram account and conservation venture, Project Planet.

He hopes to raise funds for charities committed to cleaning up our seas and beaches.

An adjudicator from the Guinness Book of Records is expected to be in attendance at the swim.
