Solent Records Memories Sought For Possible Book

Solent Record Labels

The former owner of what was the Isle of Wight’s main record company, Solent Records, is on a mission for memories so he can compile his first book.

50 years on from when the record label was established, John Waterman is now hoping to source as many stories as possible from artists he worked with over the years.

From 1970 to 2009 the record label released a number of vinyl records, cassettes, CDs and digital downloads for more than 100 artists on the Isle of Wight.

He worked with local bands and performers in a range of genres including; folk, jazz, classical and all kinds of pop.

There are two areas in particular that John is trying to find answers to. In the 1980s he recorded a cassette album for the Isle of Wight Youth Concert Band and a CD for the Island Games, when it took place on the Island in 1993.

Former Managing Director of Solent Records, John told Isle of Wight Radio:

“I am going to try and write a book in all these lockdowns about the history of the label and I can’t remember everything so there are several things I have lost track of.

“This is my first book…I have been writing and researching short articles about the music business for twenty years or so from a little office in the Isle of Wight.

Asked what his favourite memory of the time was, he said:

“I think it’s just using the most basic equipment to produce some really nice recordings that people found satisfying and sometimes sold in large numbers - some of which are on the internet and collectables.”

This is John’s first book and he is hoping Islanders with a better memory than him - will get in touch.
