Run Aground Yacht Prompts Yarmouth RNLI Call-Out

A run aground yacht led to a call-out for Yarmouth RNLI yesterday (Sunday).

Yarmouth’s Severn class all weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), was tasked by HM Coastguard at 12.22pm.

Yarmouth RNLI’s volunteer crew headed west out of Yarmouth harbour towards Warden Ledge where the 24ft vessel was located and had been waiting to refloat on the incoming tide.

Although the conditions were calm to slight with 10 knots of WNW winds, the flooding tide was pushing the vessel onto the ledge.

A spokesperson for Yarmouth RNLI:

"Instead of being able to independently free themselves on the rising tide as expected, the boat needed assistance.

"Having assessed the situation and established that the one person on board was safe and well, the Coxswain made the decision to launch the ‘Y’ boat to assess the situation and subsequently tow the casualty into deeper water.

"Once afloat the single handed sailor of the yacht continued on his journey and Yarmouth RNLI recovered their ‘Y’ boat and returned to the harbour."

Yarmouth RNLI lifeboat was ready for service at 1.36pm.
