Road In Alverstone Closed Due To Burst Water Main

Emergency repairs have led to a road closure in Alverstone today (Tuesday).

Main Road is shut from its junction with the Sandown to Newport Cycle Track, for a distance of 37 metres either side.

The closure is in place for Southern Water to repair a burst water main.

A spokesperson for Southern Water told Isle of Wight RadIo:

'We are working on emergency repairs to a burst rising main near to the River Yar. Our priority focus is on completing the repair works and minimising the impact to the environment. This incident has been reported to the Environment Agency.

'We have had to close Alverstone Shute, near Alverstone Village to allow for the tankering activity needed to divert the flow while the repair is completed. The tankers will ensure customers can continue to use their kitchen and bathroom facilities normally, while also protecting against internal flooding to properties.

'We are working hard to complete the repair on the main and reopen the road as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience this essential road closure may cause.

'No pollution is acceptable us, or to our customers and we will be working with both the EA and the local authority to minimise the disruption to our customers and the harm to the environment.'

Diversions are in place and will affect the following streets: Alverstone Road, Alverstone Shute, Borthwood Lane - Access Road, Brading Footpath 64, Golf Links Road, Lake Hill, Longwood Lane, Lower Road, Main Road, Newport Road, Sandown and Shanklin Bridleway 46, Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 35, Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 35a, Sandown and Shanklin Footpath 45, Sandown Road, The Fairway and Whitecross Lane.
