Police Officer Assaulted In Newport

A police officer has been assaulted in Newport this evening (Monday).

Police said that at 5.10pm, an officer was on mobile patrol on Carisbrooke Road / Trafalgar Road in Newport.

It’s said he was flagged down by the public, as there was a male who was allegedly being racially abusive towards a member of the public.

The officer intervened and the male then allegedly assaulted the officer.

Isle of Wight Police Sgt Radford said:

“Multiple officers attended and had to close the road for a short time. This was due to his aggressive behaviour and we needed space to get him in to a police van.

“The male is now in custody whilst we complete the investigation.

“The officer has asked me to thank the public, multiple people asked if he needed assistance in detaining the male. I am personal grateful for this and the help you offered and gave before reinforcements arrived.

“Thank you for your patience as I blocked a busy road!”
