Police Dispersal Order Activated In Shanklin After Large Groups Of Youths Gather

An anti-social behaviour related dispersal order was activated in an area of Shanklin last night after police reported a large gathering of young people.

Despite pubs, shops, and hairdressers reopening across the Island today (Saturday), gathering in groups of six or more is still prohibited by the coronavirus restrictions as laid down by Government.

Police on the Island became aware of a large gathering of youths in the Shanklin area, prompting the approval and activation of the use of Section 35 of the Anti-Social behaviour, crime and policing act.

In a Facebook post, Inspector Matt from the Island's police said:

"We are aware of a large gathering of young people in the Shanklin area this evening, thank you for your calls. Whilst the public health restrictions have significantly eased, gatherings of more than 6 (unless all members of the group are part of the same household are not permitted.

"If your children are not at home with you this evening, ask yourselves where they are and if they are in his group please encourage them to return home.

"...I have authorised the use of Section 35 of the Anti-Social behaviour, crime and policing act from 2020hrs this evening for a period of 12 hours."

The dispersal order was in place until 8.20am this morning in the area highlighted in the map below.
