Newport One Game Away From Place In The Wessex Premier League

Newport FC are on the brink of a sensational return to the Wessex Premier League.

They needed penalties to get past Folland Sports at Smallbrook Stadium, after the match finished 2-2 after extra time.

The away side took the lead shortly before half-time, but Newport hit back almost immediately through Joe Craig, to send the sides level into the half-time break.

In a second half that swung both ways, Craig thought he'd sealed the win in extra time, when he lobbed the visiting goalkeeper in the first minute of injury time. But five minutes into added time, Folland Sports won a penalty, which was converted to make it 2-2.

A crowd of 232 watched on, as Port 'keeper, Gary Streeter, made a crucial shoot-out save to give the home side an incredible 5-4 win on penalties.

Newport will play Laverstock and Ford in a Play-Off Final on Saturday (23).

Newport Manager, Steve Brougham, said:

"It was a rollercoaster of a match. It was a terrific team performance and we gave it everything. Credit to Folland Sports though, they played well.

"The result was everything for us. It's onto Saturday now - we are just one game away from promotion. It was a great evening's entertainment. Gary Streeter was our hero."
