"New Variant" Of Coronavirus May Be Causing Faster Spread In South East, Says Health Secretary

The Health Secretary says a "new variant" of coronavirus has been identified in the UK - and it may be associated with the faster spread of the illness in the South East.

Matt Hancock says there is "nothing to suggest" this variant will cause serious disease however.

He said it is "highly unlikely" that it won't respond to a vaccine.

Mr Hancock told MPs in the Commons that Greater London, South and South West of Essex and South of Hertfordshire would move into Tier 3 from midnight on Wednesday (16).

He said:

"We've therefore decided to move Greater London, the South and West of Essex, which includes Basildon, Brentwood, Harlow, Epping Forest, Castle Point, Rochford, Maldon, Braintree and Chelmsford, along with Thurrock and Southend-On-Sea borough councils and the south of Hertfordshire which means Broxbourne, Hertsmere, Watford and the Three Rivers local authority into Tier 3 which is the very high alert level."

This means people can only see friends and families, they don't live with, outdoors - and hospitality settings will have to close in those areas.

The Isle of Wight is expected to remain in Tier 1, according to the Isle of Wight Council leader.
