Mental Health Trek In Memory Of Isle Of Wight's Keith McLoughlin

"Help is out there" - that's the message from an Isle of Wight woman who is trekking more than 60 miles in memory of her good friend and ex-husband.

"Family man" Keith McLoughlin passed away earlier this year after a long-battle with depression and anxiety.

Vanessa Adams, who was with Keith for 16 years, says his death has left her and their two sons asking themselves "why".

She now wants to raise awareness of mental health, and has pledged to walk 64 miles around the Jurassic Coast in his honour.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, she said:

"He was a very good dad and is really missed by my boys.

"They'll be 22 and 21 this year. [His death] affects everybody, it affects all of his friends, all of the family and most of all it affects the children.

"I couldn't be there when Keith needed me the most. But I can help others that need the support of the valuable mental health teams around us.

"So I am going to do this walk for Keith and our two sons."

Keith was found by search teams at Downend, Arreton in January.

He was a keen sportsman, who coached both ice hockey and football to Isle of Wight youngsters.

Vanessa's hoping her trek will honour his love of sport, as well as give something back and ensure people do no suffer in silence.

"I just wanted to do this because he gave so much to young people", she said.

"He was a very giving, sporting person. In the 16 years we were together he raised the boys to be sporty. He gave so much of his own time to youngsters on the Island. He coached many football teams, the Isle of Wight Junior Raiders [ice hockey] team - we worked as part of a team. I managed them and he used to coach them.

"I suffered with mental health myself and my eldest son suffers with mental health issues and we've all had help at some point or another and it would just be nice to give something back and help those who are still suffering."

Thousands of pounds has already been raised for the Isle of Wight Suicide Prevention team, through Co-Op Funeral Care.

The walk will take place on 22 to 23 May, with all proceeds going towards mental health charity, MIND. You can donate here.

Vanessa's trek will start at Durlston Country Park, before moving on to Weymouth and then to Bridport in Dorset.

There will also be a memorial to remember Keith in August.

"It will be at Sandown Rugby Club where he used to play for the Hurricanes", Vanessa said.

"His brother is organising that. We're trying to get bands involved in that... Keith was quite a good musician. He was a drummer and played for many bands on the Island.

"So he's also missed by the music side."
