Three men aboard two dinghies had a very close call with a container ship this morning (Saturday), after one boat's engine failed to start in waters just off Southampton.

A shocking video sent in by an Isle of Wight Radio listener onboard the Red Funnel ferry shows the moment one man abandons his dinghy and swims towards the safety of his friends' boat.

Eden East and Harvey Brett-Hill said:

"Earlier today In Southampton waters, I witnessed a very close call with three men, two dinghies and a very large container ship.

"One dinghy could get its engine started and had to abandon his vessel. Swimming for his life he was almost sucked under the large container ship, but he was rescued by his friends with possibly only seconds to spare."

The Red Funnel ferry Eden and Harvey were travelling on is said to have stopped and deployed its 'man overboard procedure'.

We have approached the owners of the shipping container for a comment.
