'Major Fault' Grounds Floating Bridge For Foreseeable Future

A 'major fault' means the Floating Bridge will remain out of action for the foreseeable future.

As Isle of Wight Radio previously reported, it was taken out of service on July 14 for scheduled maintenance.

Question were raised as to why works on the Cowes to East Cowes link were not carried out during coronavirus lockdown - a time when few Islanders used the service.

The council says it was necessary to enable the 'essential link' to continue during the height of the COVID Pandemic.

It has not returned to service since July. Today (Tuesday) marks 21 days since it was first grounded.

A council spokesperson said:

"Unfortunately whilst undergoing tests prior to returning to service, a major fault with the hydraulic system has been identified. The shipbuilders and their approved contractors have investigated this and advised the council that the vessel cannot currently return to service as originally planned.

"Once the system fault and the required replacement parts have been identified, the aim will be to return the service as quickly and safely as possible.

"A further update on the likely timescales for the return of the service will be issued by the end of the week.

"The Isle of Wight Council apologises for any inconvenience caused by this ongoing disruption to the service."

A launch service for foot passengers will continue to operate from 5am to 11pm (6.30am-11pm Sundays).
