One positive that has come out of the coronavirus pandemic is that it has really pulled the whole community together in Ryde, according to charity Aspire Ryde.

Since the start of the pandemic, the charity has been running an emergency response service for vulnerable Islanders in Ryde and nearby communities.

Throughout the coronavirus crisis around 120 volunteers have been answering calls, picking up prescriptions and delivering emergency food parcels.

The charity, working with Ryde Town Council will also ensure Islanders are continued to be helped this Christmas with ‘Bags of Warmth’ as previously reported.

The Christmas Appeal also includes food and toy hampers for families, Christmas day dinners and over the phone befriending.

Usually, the charity brings Islanders who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas day together - to eat Christmas lunch amongst others in the community.

But the pandemic means the charity will freeze the meals and deliver them to your door instead.

Speaking exclusively to Isle of Wight Radio, Aspire Ryde CEO Trevor Nicholas said:

“It’s important to say that us with third sector organisations and the town council we have really come together well during this coronavirus period which has actually been one of the benefits from the lockdown and the pandemic

“A lot of those organisations that have perhaps in the past had their head down and doing things independently it has brought us closer together."

Trevor added:

“Although we are out of lockdown and back into Tier 1 we are still keeping that emergency response going and we have some initiatives to help people get through Christmas, which we know is a difficult time for people and with coronavirus, makes it even more difficult.”

Trevor also praised the efforts of volunteers who ensure the charity work can continue.
