Let's Talk About Prostate Cancer Event Announced For World Cancer Day

Wessex Cancer Alliance will mark World Cancer Day by holding an online event aimed at spreading awareness next month.

Let’s Talk About Prostate Cancer aims to raise awareness of the increased risk of prostate cancer in black men.

The event, held in partnership with Dorset Race Equality Council and Wessex Voices, will be taking place on Friday 4 February from 1pm to 2pm and bookings are now live.

Prostate cancer affects one in four men from black African, Caribbean, and black British communities – which is twice as many as the one in eight men it affects from other communities. Black men are also at risk from a younger age than other men.

Let’s Talk About Prostate Cancer will feature a range of experts with personal and clinical experience in this area who will share their knowledge and advice to empower black men and their families to discuss prostate cancer and provide them with the tools and awareness to access support.

The event will cover:

  • Signs and symptoms
  • Personal experiences of prostate cancer
  • The PSA test
  • Next steps and questions

Guest speakers will include Consultant urological surgeon, Professor Frank Chinegwundoh MBE, along with representatives from Prostate Cancer UK, Black History Month South and Pompey in the Community.

Steve Bond, engagement officer for Wessex Voices, said:

“We are excited to be marking World Cancer Day with such an important message and to be joined by so many community and charity groups as well, who have helped and continue to support us with raising awareness of prostate cancer with and for black men.”
