Isle Of Wight Sees 122mph Wind Speeds In New Record For England

The Isle of Wight has recorded record wind speeds of 122mph today (Friday) - the strongest ever felt in England.

The Met Office is reporting record gusts off the Needles, as Storm Eunice batters the UK.

Forecasters say, provisionally, it is the highest gust ever recorded in England (since records began 26 years ago).

Until now the record for a low-level location in England, had been 118mph at Gwennap Head in Cornwall on 15 December 1979.

The strongest gust ever recorded in the UK was 173mph at Cairngorm summit in the Highlands of Scotland in 1986.

A red weather warning remains in place for wind on the Island.

Ferry services to and from the Island are currently off.

Southern Vectis has now suspended ALL of its bus services.

Trees are also down, power cuts have been reported and road closures are in place - latest below.
