Isle Of Wight Residents Could See Third COVID-19 Vaccine In Autumn

A third COVID-19 vaccine could be handed out across the Isle of Wight as soon as the Autumn, Isle of Wight Radio has been told.

Dr Michelle Legg, head of the Isle of Wight Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), says the Island is awaiting guidance from NHS England.

It follows national reports which suggest plans for a booster programme could be set out in the next few weeks.

The health secretary has previously said ministers are awaiting the results of trials for different combinations of vaccines.

A third jab would be given to those who have already had their first and second vaccines. Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, Dr Legg said:

"My understanding is that we are awaiting advice from NHS England. It's likely we will be doing flu vaccines and a booster at the same time, but we are really awaiting for advice."

Asked if you would have to have the same vaccine as you had previously, Dr Legg said "we're not sure at the moment."

Dr Legg has also responded to concerns from some Islanders who say they've had their second jab cancelled.

"We definitely don't cancel second doses so that first doses can be done", she said.

"I'm not aware of anyone getting vaccines cancelled. We do second doses when the time is right and we definitely don't cancel second doses to push first doses."

She says if an appointment is cancelled, wait to be contacted again.

A series of walk-in appointments for first doses are being carried out for Islanders aged 18 and over this week.

Dr Legg says she's hoping walk-in appointments for second doses will be available in the near future.
