Isle Of Wight Protesters Face Fines After "Illegal" Anti-Lockdown Demonstration

Isle of Wight police are investigating after an "illegal" anti-lockdown protest took place in Newport over the weekend.

Hampshire Constabulary says a group of around 20 people gathered with placards in Church Litten on Saturday (8).

They convened in the park area to protest against the current national restrictions in place because of COVID-19, according to police.

If the evidence supports it, police say they could issue fines to those that took part.

Under the Government's new national regulations in place, it is illegal for protest of any sort involving a gathering of people to take place as they could spread the disease between people putting lives and the NHS at risk.

Officers are now reviewing the evidence, including Body Worn Video footage and CCTV.

They will be working to identify those who were involved in the demonstration.

Superintendent Phil Lamb said:

“The vast majority of people on the Isle of Wight are complying with the regulations in order to limit the spread of infection, and we do not underestimate how difficult that is for everyone. However organising and taking part in public protests involving groups of people is illegal currently and that's for everyone's safety.

“It is frustrating then that we have had to deal with such a clear breach of the current restrictions.

“I would like to remind people that officers have the power to issue £10,000 fines to the organisers of large gatherings such as demonstrations and people attending can be fined £200 for a first offence.

“Everyone has to do their bit to limit the spread of the virus. Our approach has always been to engage, explain and encourage people to act responsibly, but we won’t hesitate to use enforcement action where necessary.

"Even if you do not agree with the rules you must keep within them. They are there to help keep you and everyone else safe during this time. If you want to get your views heard you need to find different and legal ways or you are likely to end up with what could be a very large fine."
