Isle Of Wight Musician Hopes New Single Will Raise Awareness About Lockdown Mental Health

A talented Isle of Wight rapper has been putting his spare time to good use by releasing a new single, inspired by thoughts and feelings during lockdown.

Levi Collins has teamed up with writer and producer, Tim Hutton, to create and release the track, You Said.

Levi is well-known on the Island music scene, but hasn't been able to perform since the beginning of last year - along with most acts - due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Levi and Tim have used the hours wisely, writing and recording new tracks - and even managing to film a music video, which will be released on February 26.

Openly talking about his own mental health battles in the past, Levi said he wants to continue to help and inspire people through music.

Speaking to Isle of Wight Radio, the 30 year old said:

"When I was at school, I realised I had an overactive brain. Whenever there were times I had to be quiet, I’d be writing what started as poems and would later become lyrics. It became a focus for my extra energy and a way to express myself.

"When I was younger, I was inspired by artists like Eminem and bands like Nirvana. As I got older, I became influenced by UK rap and grime artists. I found it inspiring to see British artists achieving recognition in the industry.

"I don’t remember life without music, as a kid I have memories of my dad always playing records. My mum would be trying to hide my favourites which was pretty much most of the parental advisories."

Levi, who grew up in Ryde, admits he has experienced dark and difficult times during his own mental health battles. But after seeking help and support, he hopes his passion for music will help to inspire others.

He continued:

"I had a lot of ups and downs in my early 20s. When I was 27, I had to undergo a double hip operation that left me unable to pursue my previous lifestyle and sporting passions.

"Music and writing was something I could put my focus into at a time when I was unable to do so many other things.

"The last year has been crazy for everyone and I know how hard people have found it.

I want to make music that people can resonate with. I feel there’s a lot of unrecognised talent on the Island and I want to go out there and prove it doesn’t matter how small a place you come from, you can still smash it!"
