Isle Of Wight Law Centre To Close Over Lack Of Funding

The Isle of Wight Law Centre has announced it will close at the end of the month (August), after attempts to secure funding failed.

The centre, which has been providing free legal advice for around 20 years, will shut for the final time on August 31.

A spokesperson for law centre said:

"As many of our long standing supporters and clients will know, we have fought for many years to maintain our valuable, free confidential and independent advice, representation & support service for people of the IOW (the service that the Island deserves and needs).

"Unfortunately attempts to secure further funding have not come to fruition, and sadly at a time when our services are/will be needed more than ever."

The centre's future has been fraught with uncertainty for a number of years.

In 2019, the Isle of Wight Council didn't renew its contract to provide legal services. It meant the centre had to seek alternative funding, which ensured its immediate future.

Three years on, and a decision has now been made to shut permanently.

A spokesperson added:

"Firstly we would like to thank our wonderful, caring, talented, professional staff, Past and Present!, for all of your hard work and determination in delivering valued help and support to the most vulnerable.

"Secondly, thank you to all of our lovely supporters and clients many of which feel like family to us.

"And finally, thank you to everyone who supported us over the last 20 years. Over and out."
