Isle Of Wight A-Level Students Praised For "Resilience And Strength"

After a challenging couple of years due to the pandemic, Isle of Wight A-Level students have been praised for their "resilience and strength".

Hundreds of pupils have been collecting their results this morning (Tuesday). And on Thursday (12), it will be the turn of GCSE students.

As well as exams being cancelled, both cohorts have seen face-to-face learning reduced to a minimum.

That hasn't stopped Island pupils achieving success, and their achievements have been commended.

Cabinet lead for Children’s Services, Education and Skills, Councillor Debbie Andre, said:

“We are extremely proud of our Post-16 students who have shown, once again, resilience and strength. They have continued to work hard throughout the pandemic and all the disruptions that has brought.

“I would like to congratulate all of the students on their hard work during unprecedented times and how they have responded to those challenges. I also wish to thank the tutors and employers who have shown determination and compassion in supporting these young people through their studies and apprenticeships.

"Families and carers can also feel very proud of the increased support they have also had to give our young people over the past year.”

Due to the cancellation of exams, the Isle of Wight Council says it won't provide pass rates for the Island or schools results.

But schools have been reacting themselves. Joy Ballard, headteacher of Ryde Academy, told Isle of Wight Radio:

"This cohort have had the toughest time with all of the lockdowns, certainly as part of their sixth form lives. But they've just been incredible and worked so hard to catch up and we're just very, very proud of them."

Jemma Harding, Vice-Principal of Cowes Enterprise College, said:

"They're [the results] are a fair reflection of all the children's hard work. Their determination, their tenacity, it's not just two years of study.

"This is a culmination of their school career and it's an absolute privilege to be here with them today. It's actually quite emotional!"
